Quality is actually pretty good but the cuts make this a less attractive show to have. There is a cut in the bass solo, all of "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and "Panama," small cuts in "Everybody Wants Some!!" and a small cut between the end of "Jamie's Cryin'" and the beginning of "I'll Wait." There are also periodic dropouts in songs. Editing was minimal and was only for gap removal, and splicing "Everybody Wants Some!!" from the end of side 1 of the tape to the beginning of side 2. This show does have some distinguishing features. First, it's a January 1984 show of which we have only three recordings total. The earlier shows are a little more interesting in that the band is trying to settle into the 1984 setlist. Next, the big one. Dave screws up "Little Guitars" almost beyond repair. At the end of the refrain following the first verse, he sings it as if it were the refrain following the second verse. For about 30 seconds the band mucks their way through the song; however the first time you hear it, it sounds like an eternity. Eddie then seems to not yet be comfortable with the keyboards; there are noticeable flubs on "I'll Wait." The keyboard solo is a little more draw out than usual, and it doesn't sound like Ed really had his ideas altogether. Compared to the keyboard solos from March 1984 on, the solo sounds disorganized and a little sloppy. "Everybody Wants Some!!" has a weird feedback around 3:50 in the middle of the song, to which Dave jokes, "Looks like the sound crew's on heavy narcotics tonight!" The song is also shorter than later renditions which venture into the 15 minute range. Dave introduces "Girl Gone Bad" as "Girls Gone Bad." The guitar solo, as with all guitar solos prior to Chicago 3/13/84, does not have the Eric Clapton blues jam, so it's straightforward, compact Eddie. Finally, in ATBL, you can hear traces of the "Good Enough" riff. Not nearly as much as New Haven 3/24/84, but there are traces. Also at the end of ATBL, look for a tease of "Sunshine of Your Love." If not for the cuts, this would be a show suitable for most, just because it has features, good and bad, that you won't find in other 1984 show. Given that the 1984 tour was for the most part a cookie cutter setlist, anything the least bit out of the ordinary separates a 1984 show from the rest of its brethren.
